Our Cooperative

Few words about our Cooperative…

We Have One Goal

To Ensure Food-Secure Future for All.

It began with a dream shared by a small group of African immigrants who arrived in Canada’s urban center with a passion for agriculture. Though they came from different nations across the vast African continent, they were united by a profound love for the lands that had sustained their ancestors for generations and a desire to continue nurturing their heritage’s traditional crops and foodways.

In those early days, they worked gruelling hours at minimum wage jobs, scrimping and saving every penny. But their proverbial seeds of hope refused to be extinguished. They formed the African Farmers Cooperative, pooling their modest resources to lease a small plot on the city’s outskirts. With calloused hands, they tilled the unfamiliar soil, replicating the natural farming methods passed down through generations back home.

Neighbours were puzzled by the unfamiliar leafy greens and vibrantly coloured vegetables springing forth. But those first tentative harvests held inexplicable meaning for the farmers—the nourishing reconnection to their roots trans-planted in this new world. Word travelled through communities, and demand slowly grew for their unique and authentic produce.

Over time, more farmers from across the African diaspora joined the cooperative. They experimented with growing techniques, shared wisdom, celebrated successes, and comforted each other through inevitable setbacks. Thick brotherhood ties were forged between these farmers, who had become more than just business partners.

The cooperative blossomed from humble beginnings into a flourishing network of farms and orchards producing an incredible array of traditional African crops, grains, herbs, livestock, and poultry. Strong partnerships were cultivated with markets, restaurants, institutions, and organizations supporting its mission of improving food security through culinary diversity.

Beyond providing nutritious foodstuffs, this farmer’s cooperative sparked a cultural renaissance. Elders beamed with pride watching younger generations rediscover their heritage foods. Culinary traditions were invigorated, and ancestral knowledge surrounding seed saving, farming, foraging, and food preservation was passed on.

In both fields and cities across Canada, the African Farmers Cooperative took root – nourishing bodies, preserving precious legacies, and planting the seeds for an abundant, sustainable and deliciously multifaceted future for all.

Vision Statement

Our vision is a future where all Canadians can access a diverse array of culturally relevant and nutritious foods that nourish their bodies, celebrate their heritage, and build connections between diverse communities.

We envision a thriving cooperative that empowers African farmers to share their agricultural knowledge, sustain their farming traditions, and play an integral role in ensuring long-term food security and sustainability across Canada.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to establish a robust and united cooperative of African farmers in Canada that will:

Produce high-quality, culturally appropriate crops and foods that meet the dietary needs and preferences of African diaspora communities across Canada.

Promote sustainable and environmentally responsible farming practices that preserve biodiversity and protect the land for future generations.

Provide training, resources and support to enable African farmers to adapt their traditional agricultural methods to the Canadian climate and context.

Create economic opportunities and financial stability for African farmer members through fair pricing, collective marketing, and direct market access.

Foster cultural exchange, education and appreciation for diverse culinary traditions by making African heritage foods more accessible to all Canadians.

Collaborate with local communities, organizations and government to address food insecurity, nutrition education, and the importance of agricultural diversity.

Through collective effort, cultural preservation and innovative farming, we will nourish communities, Mother Earth and one another on our shared journey toward a food-secure future for all.
